Referral first or application first?

The order of applying and asking for a referral, with the plain trade-offs.

Quick answer: Ask your referrer which they prefer, tell them if you have already applied and mind the deadline.

1 min read

There is no single right order, and the best choice depends on the company. The key is to avoid confusing the recruiter or the person helping you. This is general information, as every employer handles it differently.

Apply first, then ask

  • You are definitely in the process if the role is closing soon.
  • Some referral systems expect you to have applied already, so check.
  • Tell your referrer that you have applied, and share the date.

Ask first, then apply

  • Your referrer may need to submit you through the company's own portal, and a separate application can create a duplicate.
  • You give them time to decide before the deadline.
  • Wait for their answer before you apply, unless the deadline is close.

Whichever you choose

Be open with your referrer about what you have done. Ask them which they would prefer, because they often know how their company's process works. If time is tight, say so clearly and politely.
