Keeping your referrer updated

When and how to share progress after someone refers you, without nagging.

1 min read

Someone who refers you is investing a little of their reputation in you. A short update now and then is a courtesy, and it keeps the relationship warm. You do not need to share everything.

Good moments to send a note

  • Straight after they refer you, to say thank you.
  • When you hear something concrete, such as an interview or a decision.
  • If you accept another offer, so they are not waiting on you.

Keep it short

Hi [name], a quick update: I have an interview on [date] for the [role]. Thank you again for referring me. I'll let you know how it goes.

What not to do

  • Ask them for inside information on the hiring decision, which they may not have or be allowed to share.
  • Send updates every few days.
  • Share confidential details of the interview process if you have been asked not to.

Whatever the outcome, a final thank-you is remembered. People are far more likely to help again when they have been treated well.
