Referrals vs cold applications
What a referral changes in practice, and when a cold application is perfectly fine.
1 min read
A cold application goes straight into the pile. A referral comes with a person attached, which often means a human looks at it sooner. Neither is a guarantee of an interview.
What a referral can help with
- Your application is flagged to the recruiter as coming from an employee.
- A colleague has read your CV and thinks you meet the requirements.
- You can ask the referrer questions about the team and the role.
What it cannot do
- It does not guarantee an interview or an offer. The company still decides.
- It does not replace a CV that is tailored to the role.
When to apply cold
If you cannot find anyone relevant, or the role closes soon, apply directly. You can still ask for a referral later if you find someone. Some companies limit referrals to open roles, so check timing.
Doing both in the right order matters: ask the referrer first, then apply through the route they tell you to use.
