Asking a former colleague for a referral

How to reconnect with someone you used to work with, and ask in a way that is easy for them.

1 min read

A former colleague already knows how you work, which makes them one of the strongest people to ask. It can still feel awkward if you have not spoken for a while. Reconnect first, and keep the ask small.

Reconnect before you ask

  • Say hello and mention something you shared, such as a project or a team.
  • Ask how they are and what they are working on now.
  • Wait for a reply before you bring up the role, unless you are short of time.

Template

Hi [name], it's been a while since [project / team]. I hope all is well at [company]. I'm applying for [role] there and wondered if you'd be comfortable referring me, given you know how I work. I've attached my CV and the job link. No pressure at all if it's not possible.

Be specific about what you hope they can say

Remind them of work you did together and the strengths it showed. A referrer who remembers a concrete example can write a much better note than one who has only a general impression of you.

If they are not sure

They may be unsure about the role, or about their company's referral rules. Thank them, and ask if they would be happy to point you to someone better placed. Stay in touch either way.

Put it into practice
