Choosing who to ask

Pick people who have worked with you recently and can describe what you did.
Where you can, include a manager and a colleague, or a tutor if you are early in your career.
Ask first. Never list someone without their agreement.
Have a spare person in mind in case someone is away.

Asking well

Tell them the role and company you are applying for, and roughly when they may be contacted.
Send your current CV and the job description so they can speak to what matters.
Make it easy to say no, and thank them either way.
Check their name, job title, email and phone number are correct.

Afterwards

Tell them when you hear back, whatever the outcome.
Send a short thank-you.
Keep in touch, so you are not only in contact when you need something.
