How to prepare for interviews after a referral
A referral can get your CV read. These steps help you make the most of the conversation that follows.
1 min read
A referral opens the door. The interview is still your chance to show you can do the job. Preparation matters more than polish.
Before the interview
- Re-read the job description and write down two examples of your work for each main requirement.
- Read the company's own website and recent public announcements so you can ask informed questions.
- Prepare a short answer to 'Tell me about yourself' that links your background to this role.
- Check the format with the recruiter: length, who you will meet, and any tasks to complete.
Using your referrer
Your referrer is not your coach and may not know the interview process. If you have a good relationship, a polite question about the team can help, but do not ask them to share confidential details.
Afterwards
Send the recruiter a brief thank-you, and let your referrer know how it went. Tell us on your applications page if you got an interview. It helps other candidates.
