Getting a referral when you need visa sponsorship

General tips for international candidates. Not legal or immigration advice.

1 min read

This is general information, not legal or immigration advice. Rules change, so check official government guidance or speak to a qualified adviser about your own situation.

Be upfront, briefly

Say in one line that you will need sponsorship, so nobody spends time on a mismatch. Referrers on Doorstep also tell you whether they believe their company sponsors for the roles they refer into.

Confirm with the company

  • An employee's view of sponsorship can be out of date. The company's recruiters have the final answer.
  • Policies can differ by role, level or team.
  • Ask the recruiter early, at the first stage where it is appropriate.

Make the referrer's job easy

Include your CV, the role link, and a sentence on your current situation and timeline. The easier it is for them to see fit, the more likely a useful answer.

Put it into practice
