Asking for a referral from abroad
How to ask for a referral when you live in another country or time zone, and how to be clear about your right to work.
Quick answer: Say where you are, state your right to work plainly, suggest a time-zone-friendly way to reply, and keep it short.

Applying to a UK company from another country is common, but it raises questions the employee will want answered early: where you are, whether you can work in the UK, and when you could start. Answering them up front makes a referral much easier to give.
Be plain about your right to work
- State your situation in one sentence, for example whether you already have the right to work in the UK or would need sponsorship.
- Do not hide it or leave it for later. It affects whether the employer can hire you at all.
- Check the employer's own guidance, because policies on sponsorship differ between companies and roles.
Make time zones easy
- Say your location and local time, such as your time zone relative to London.
- Offer written replies rather than a call. They can answer in their own working hours.
- If you suggest a call, give a window in UK time so they do not have to convert.
A short template
Hi [name], I'm applying for the [role] position at [company]. I'm currently based in [country] and [have / would need] the right to work in the UK. I've attached my CV and the job link. Would you be willing to refer me? Replying by message is perfect, whenever suits you.
Also worth saying
- When you could start, including any notice period.
- Whether you would relocate, or are looking for a remote or hybrid role.
