How to prepare for a first call with a referrer
A short checklist for when someone offers to talk before they refer you.
1 min read
Some referrers like a quick chat before they put their name to someone. It is usually about ten or fifteen minutes, and it is a chance for them to see that you are thoughtful and genuine, not a test.
Before the call
- Re-read the job description and pick two or three things you can speak to with an example.
- Look at their profile so you know their team and what they work on.
- Have your CV open, and be ready to say in a sentence why this role.
- Write down two or three questions about the team or the work.
During the call
- Be on time, and be brief. Let them lead, and answer what they ask.
- Give one specific example rather than a list of skills.
- Ask about their experience, not about the referral bonus or whether you will get the job.
- Be honest about gaps. It is better they hear it from you.
After the call
Send a short thank-you the same day, and make it easy for them: mention the role and attach anything they asked for. Then give them time. If you have not heard back after a week, one polite follow-up is fine.
