How to write a CV for a referral

A CV that makes your referrer's job easy: clear, specific and matched to the role.

Quick answer: Keep it to a clear PDF of one or two pages, match it to the job description and put your best evidence first.

1 min read

Your referrer will skim your CV in a few minutes and decide whether they are comfortable putting their name next to it. Make the match obvious.

Structure

  • Name, location and contact details at the top.
  • Two or three lines saying what you do and what you are looking for.
  • Most recent role first, with results rather than duties.
  • Education and relevant skills at the end.

Match it to the job

Read the job description and move your most relevant experience higher. Use the same terms the employer uses where they are accurate for you.

Practical checks

  • One or two pages, saved as a PDF.
  • Consistent dates and job titles.
  • No photo, date of birth or other details that are not needed.
  • Proofread it, then ask a friend to read it too.
