Referrals for career changers
How to ask for a referral when your experience comes from a different field.
1 min read
A referrer is vouching that you are worth a recruiter's time. If your CV does not obviously match the job title, your job is to make the connection for them.
Translate your experience
- Pick the three or four requirements in the job description that you can genuinely meet.
- Describe past work in the language of the new field, with real examples.
- Mention relevant courses, projects or certificates you have completed.
Be upfront in your note
I'm moving from [previous field] into [new field]. For this role, the relevant parts of my background are [specific example] and [specific example]. I've also completed [course or project].
Choose roles carefully
Referrers tend to say yes when the match is reasonable. Aim for roles one step from where you are, rather than a leap that needs several explanations.
