Referrals for internships and placements

How students can ask for internship referrals, and what to include.

1 min read

Employees often refer students and early-career candidates, especially when they went to the same university or studied the same subject. You will not have much work experience, so show what you have done instead.

What to mention

  • Your course, year and expected graduation date.
  • Projects, societies, part-time work or coursework relevant to the role.
  • The dates you are available for the placement.

Template

Hi [name], I'm a [year] student studying [course] at [university], applying for the [internship] at [company]. I've [relevant project or experience]. Would you be open to referring me, or giving me a quick pointer on the application?

Apply early. Some schemes fill places as applications arrive, so check the closing date.
