Referrals for graduate schemes
How referrals fit alongside the usual graduate scheme application process.
1 min read
Many graduate schemes have their own application process, deadlines and online tests. A referral does not replace these. Each scheme works differently, so read the employer's own guidance first.
What a referral can do
- Help you understand what the team does and what the scheme is like.
- In some companies, flag your application to the recruiters.
- Give you someone to ask about the application, if they are willing.
What it cannot do
- It cannot guarantee an interview or an offer.
- It cannot skip closing dates or required assessments.
Practical steps
- Check the closing date and eligibility on the employer's website.
- Complete the official application yourself, and mention your referrer if the form asks.
- Ask your referrer how their company handles referrals for schemes, as some require them before you apply.
