Getting a referral for marketing roles
How to show campaign, content or channel work in a short request, using your own real results and no invented figures.
Quick answer: Pick one piece of work, say your part and what happened, and link to it if you can share it.
1 min read
Marketing work is visible, so a referrer will want to see something real. A single clear example, with a link where you can share it, says more than a list of channels.
Choose one piece of work
- Pick the campaign, content or project closest to the role you want.
- Say what the goal was and what you were responsible for.
- Describe what happened, using figures only if they are yours to share and you can explain them.
Show how you work with others
Marketing depends on designers, sales and product teams. A line on how you worked with them, or how you handled feedback, tells a referrer about you as a colleague.
Keep the request short
Hi [name], I'm applying for the [role] position at [company]. A project I'm proud of is [one example, with a link if you can share it]. My CV is attached. Would you be willing to refer me? No problem at all if not.
Match the tools and channels in the job description to ones you have really used, and leave out anything you could not discuss in an interview.
