Getting a referral for design roles
What to send with a referral request for a design role: a focused portfolio, one or two case studies and a short note.
Quick answer: Send a link to a focused portfolio, name one or two case studies and say what your part was in each.

A referrer cannot judge design work from a CV alone, so a portfolio matters. Make it easy to open, quick to scan and clear about your own part in each project.
Point them to the right work
- Link directly to the portfolio, with no login or download needed.
- Name the one or two case studies most relevant to the role.
- Check that links work on a phone, since your referrer may open them there.
Write case studies that explain decisions
- State the problem and who it was for.
- Show how you got to your solution, including what you tried and dropped.
- Be clear what you did yourself and what the team did.
Keep the message short
Hi [name], I'm applying for the [role] position at [company]. My CV is attached and my portfolio is at [link]. The case study on [project] is the closest to this role. Would you be willing to refer me? No problem at all if not.
Do not share anything confidential from past employers. If a project is under an agreement, say so and describe it in general terms.
